Black History is American History. Thanks to the Black History is American History.

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, February 1st through March 1st is honored around the nation as Black History Month. Dr. Woodson’s story is powerful — born just ten years after the end of the Civil War, he worked as a West Virginia coal miner, a teacher and then a principal, becoming the second African American after W.E.B. Du Bois to earn his PhD at Harvard University, where he graduated in 1912. Dr. Woodson quickly recognized that the white-dominated historical societies and education system in America excluded #BlackHistory by intentional design, so he set out to form a new system where Black scholars could study history and where the innumerable accomplishments of African Americans could be highlighted, taught, and celebrated.

In 1926, he founded a week-long precursor to #BlackHistoryMonth through his organization ASALH: Association for the Study of African American Life and History whose journal has been continuously published in the 107 years since its founding. Two decades following Dr. Carter G. Woodson’s death in 1976, this week-long celebration was expanded to a full month and every US President to hold office since then has issued proclamations about the annual theme set by ASALH.

2023’s theme is #BlackResistance: "As societal and political forces escalate to limit access to and exercise of the ballot, eliminate the teaching of Black history, and work to push us back into the 1890s, we can only rely on our capacity to resist. The enactment of HR 40, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the Breathe Act, and the closure of the racial wealth gap is not the end. They too will require us to mobilize our resources, human and material, and fight for 'freedom, justice, and equality'; 'self-determination', and/or 'social transformation.'"

From 2017 - 2021, 73% of Trans people murdered wer From 2017 - 2021, 73% of Trans people murdered were killed with a gun. Depsite an epidemic of gun violence in the United States that in recent years has seen hundreds of Transgender individuals murdered & countless more injured, lawmakers across the country continue to advance dangerous gun policies and anti-Trans legislation.

Due to generations of systemic racism, gun violence impacts Black Americans at a disproportionate rate. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, "While just 13 percent of the trans population in the United States is estimated to be Black, 63 percent of known Trans homicide victims were Black women."

Led by Everytown for Gun Safety, this year's National Gun Violence Survivors Week is Wednesday, February 1 – Tuesday, February 7, 2023 and calls on the nation to share and lift up survivors’ stories, and for survivors to share their lived experiences with gun violence. Read and share survivors’ stories at momentsthatsurvive.org. #GVSurvivorsWeek

Transinclusive Group's Executive Director Tatiana Transinclusive Group's Executive Director Tatiana Williams & Program Coordinator Adrianna Tender, along with our friend Jasmin Lewis, served as co-hosts of the 2023 Human Rights Campaign Dinner on Saturday, and our staff and Board was proud to join HRC for this important evening of advocacy!

With powerful speakers including the Human Rights Campaign's President Kelley Robinson, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Amrit Kapai, Becky George, Nik Harris, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Alfredo Olvera, Brayland Brown, and Kamisha Green, along with comedian Dana Goldberg & American Idol star Kimberley Locke, this was an inspiring evening that left us all feeling motivated to continue the work of fighting for equality in our communities.
Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. As we honor the memory of the six million Jewish people and millions of others including the Roma, disabled people, LGBTQ+ individuals, and so many more whose lives were stolen by the Nazis, we each have a deep moral imperative to ensure that their stories are never forgotten and that history never repeats itself.

With the destructive, violent power of hatred and bigotry once again gaining footholds around the world, and with powerful forces who would have us revise our history to omit dark truths or ban what our students can learn and restrict what books they can read, we must not allow the horrors of the past to be forgotten, denied, or repeated. Never Again means fighting back against antisemitism wherever we see it. It means pushing back against dangerous rhetoric that incites fear of others and fuels violence and extremism. It means uniting in solidarity to ensure that history is remembered and learned from.
