Historical data indicates that there were 2,351 known transgender persons diagnosed with HIV from 2009 through 2014 in the United States.  Of these diagnoses, 84% were transgender women and 15% were transgender men.  Further, among transgender adults living with HIV in Florida, 51% were Black transgender women, whereas 34% of these transgender women were 30-39 years of age.  Among transgender men living with HIV, 50% were white. The most common mode of HIV exposure for transgender women is anal sex with men, resulting in 87% of these women exposed to the virus. Overall, it is to be noted that at the end of 2016 in Broward County, 1 in 78 adults were known to be living with HIV; 1 in 90 Caucasians were living with HIV; 1 in 43 Blacks were living with HIV; and 1 in 145 Hispanics were living with HIV.

  • Linkage to PrEP ( Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is approved by the FDA and has been shown to be safe and effective. A single pill taken once daily, it is highly effective against contracting HIV when taken as prescribed.

  • Linkage to PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a month-long course of drugs to help prevent HIV infections that is taken after a possible exposure to HIV.  It is most effective when started within 24 hours, but it must be started within 72 hours.
